Every tile on this calculator is a single division. The numerator is whatever CO₂e quantity you enter, converted to a common mass basis. The denominator is the per-unit intensity of a reference activity — kilograms of CO₂e per kilometre driven, per litre of petrol burned, per kilowatt-hour of grid electricity consumed, per tree seedling grown over ten years. The output is the number of those units that carries the same carbon weight as your input.

The calculator is one-directional. It converts CO₂e into activities. It does not convert activities into CO₂e. To go the other way — to compute the emissions of a fleet, a building, or a fuel purchase from activity data — use the inventory calculators: stationary combustion, mobile combustion, or purchased electricity. This tool sits downstream of an inventory, not upstream of one.

Every factor is a live read. The engine reads each denominator from the MasterBrain V3 canonical row set at page render. No equivalency value is hardcoded in this page, in the engine, or in a fallback table. When DEFRA publishes its next annual conversion factors, or when EPA republishes eGRID, the numbers on this page change without an editorial edit. If the MasterBrain is unavailable the calculator renders no numbers at all rather than approximate ones — a missing factor omits its tile; a missing MasterBrain idles the whole tool with a warning. There is no silent degradation to a stale estimate.

Region basis. Two bases are supported: gbr (United Kingdom) and usa (United States). The UK basis derives its tiles from DEFRA 2026 conversion factors, the DEFRA 2026 GB location-based grid factor, DESNZ NEED dwelling-consumption medians, and an IPCC Tier 1 temperate-broadleaf forest removal rate. The US basis derives its tiles from the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference set and the EPA eGRID 2023 national average grid factor. The two bases are not interchangeable and are never blended. A tile that has no defensible source under a given region is omitted from that region rather than substituted from the other.

Three categories, never netted. Results render under three separate headers: Equivalent to emitting, Equivalent to sequestering, and Equivalent to avoiding. Each tile carries a structural category tag that flows through the interface, the audit table, and the JSON and CSV exports. The three are parallel disclosures describing the same input quantity from different directions. Subtracting one from another is not a supported operation and is not a meaningful statement about the atmosphere. A block hides when it has no tiles under the selected region — the avoided block appears only under the US basis, because every avoided tile is US-sourced. The reasons are set out in full below.

Rounding. Equivalency counts round by magnitude: thousands and above render as comma-separated integers, values above ten as integers, values above one to one decimal place, and progressively finer below that. The input quantity itself promotes to kilotonnes above ten thousand tonnes and demotes to kilograms below one kilogram. Counts do not promote — a count of six thousand kilometres renders as a kilometre count, not as a scaled unit.

A tonne of carbon dioxide is invisible, weightless to the senses, and impossible to picture. It is also the unit in which every corporate climate target, every regulatory disclosure, and every net-zero commitment is denominated. The gap between the number on the disclosure and any intuitive sense of what it represents is the reason equivalencies exist at all — and the reason they are so consistently misused.

An equivalency tells you what a tonne feels like. It does not tell you what a tonne is worth.

What one tonne of CO₂e actually is

A tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent is one thousand kilograms of greenhouse gas, expressed in the warming potency of an equal mass of carbon dioxide. Both halves of that sentence carry weight, and the second half is where most misunderstanding begins.

The “e” — why CO₂e is not CO₂

Carbon dioxide is one greenhouse gas among many. Methane, nitrous oxide, and the fluorinated gases each trap heat at a different rate over a different atmospheric lifetime. To sum them into a single inventory figure they are converted to a common currency using global warming potential — a multiplier expressing how much energy the emission of one tonne of a gas absorbs over a chosen horizon, relative to one tonne of CO₂. Multiply each gas by its GWP, sum the products, and the result is carbon dioxide equivalent.

Key Point

A tonne of CO₂e is not necessarily a tonne of CO₂. It may be a much smaller mass of methane, or a vanishingly small mass of a refrigerant, carrying the same hundred-year warming effect. The equivalency tiles on this calculator translate the warming effect, not the molecular mass. This distinction matters when the input quantity originates from a refrigerant-leakage or agricultural inventory rather than a combustion one.

The GWP multipliers themselves are not fixed. They are revised with each IPCC assessment cycle, which is why the same physical leak of methane produces different CO₂e figures under AR6 than under AR5 or AR4. The consequences of that revision for this calculator specifically are set out in the data-sources section below, and they are more intricate than most equivalency tools admit.

Physical scale, and why a tonne is invisible

Carbon dioxide at standard temperature and pressure has a density of roughly two kilograms per cubic metre. One tonne therefore occupies something in the region of five hundred cubic metres of gas — a volume comparable to a modest detached house, filled floor to ceiling. It is released into an atmosphere of roughly five and a half quadrillion tonnes, where it disperses beyond any possibility of direct observation.

This is the intuition problem in its entirety. The quantity is large enough to be physically enormous and small enough to be individually undetectable, and human judgement handles neither end of that scale well. Equivalencies exist to substitute a familiar quantity for an unfamiliar one: not because kilometres driven are a more accurate representation of a tonne, but because a reader has a body-level sense of how far a car goes and no body-level sense of five hundred cubic metres of invisible gas.

That substitution is a rhetorical act. It is legitimate, useful, and widely practised by the EPA, DEFRA, and every major disclosure framework’s communications team. It is also the point at which a defensible inventory figure becomes a persuasive claim, and the point at which the accounting rules stop applying and start being quietly violated.

How to read the calculator’s three result categories

The calculator renders results under three headers, and the separation between them is structural rather than cosmetic. Every tile carries a category tag that follows it through the interface, the audit table, and the data exports. Understanding which category a tile belongs to — and why the categories cannot be combined — is the single most important thing a reader takes from this page.

Equivalent to emitting

The first category answers: what activity, performed once, releases this quantity of CO₂e into the atmosphere? Driving a car for a year. Burning a volume of petrol or diesel. Consuming a household’s annual electricity. Charging a smartphone some enormous number of times. These are emission sources. Each represents a real, factual, additive contribution to atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration. The arithmetic is a division of your quantity by the activity’s emission intensity, and the resulting count is the number of times the activity would need to occur to match your input.

Equivalent to sequestering

The second category describes carbon physically removed from the atmosphere and stored in biomass — a tree seedling growing across ten years, a hectare of temperate broadleaf forest accumulating woody tissue over a season. The carbon exists somewhere. It occupies a stock that can be measured, and that stock is reversible: fire, disease, harvest, and land-use change all return it to the atmosphere.

Equivalent to avoiding

The third category describes emissions that would have occurred in a counterfactual world and did not — a wind turbine displacing grid generation for a year, a hectare of forest preserved from conversion, a tonne of waste recycled rather than landfilled. Nothing was removed. There is no stock, nothing to store, and nothing to lose. The figure depends entirely on an assumed baseline that never happened and cannot be observed.

This block appears only under the US region basis. Every avoided tile in the calculator derives from the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference set, and no equivalent DEFRA or DESNZ publication supplies one. Under the UK basis the block is absent rather than populated from US figures.

Warning

Sequestration and avoidance are routinely conflated, including by tools that group them under a single “carbon removed” heading. A sequestered tonne has been removed from the atmosphere and is held in a physical, reversible carbon stock. An avoided tonne was never emitted; no stock exists. The atmospheric consequence differs, the permanence differs, and the accounting treatment under every removals framework differs. This calculator separates them structurally so the distinction cannot be lost in transcription.

Emitted

An activity that releases CO₂e. Factual. Additive to atmospheric stock. Appears in a GHG inventory as a Scope 1, 2, or 3 line. Tiles: vehicle distance, vehicle-years, petrol, diesel, coal, natural gas, home electricity, home energy, smartphone charges, therms, oil barrels, coal railcars, gasoline tankers, waste to landfill.

Sequestered

CO₂ physically removed from the atmosphere and held in a carbon stock. Reversible — fire, disease, harvest, and land-use change all return it. Accounted under removals frameworks, never as a reduction in gross emissions. Tiles: tree seedlings grown for ten years, growing forest or woodland accumulating biomass over a year.

Avoided

Emissions that would have occurred under a counterfactual baseline and did not. No physical stock exists. Depends entirely on the assumed baseline, which is unobservable. Never netted against reported emissions under any recognised framework. Tiles, US basis only: forest preserved from conversion, a wind turbine’s annual displacement of grid generation, recycled waste diverted from landfill.

Key Point

The three categories are never netted against one another. A result showing that your quantity is equivalent both to a number of kilometres driven and to a number of tree seedlings grown does not mean the seedlings cancel the driving. Both statements describe the same input quantity from two directions. Subtracting one from the other would produce zero — which is exactly the arithmetic that a great deal of climate-communication malpractice depends on.

How each equivalency is derived

Each tile divides your input by a single denominator drawn from the MasterBrain. The provenance of that denominator is what distinguishes a defensible equivalency from a decorative one. What follows is the derivation of each, without the values themselves — those are live reads and appear in the tool above, and in the audit-mode table, where they are stamped with the MasterBrain version under which they rendered.

Vehicle distance and vehicle-years

Under the UK basis, vehicle distance derives from the DEFRA 2026 average-car petrol factor, expressed in kilograms of CO₂e per kilometre. It is a fleet-average figure across engine sizes, not a specific vehicle. There is no fuel-type selector: petrol stands as the single representative case, and a diesel equivalent would differ. The vehicle-year tile multiplies that per-kilometre intensity by the Department for Transport’s National Travel Survey median annual car distance, producing the emissions of one average British car over one average year.

Under the US basis, both tiles come pre-bundled from the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference set: a passenger-vehicle-year figure and a vehicle-mile figure, each a US fleet average encompassing the full national vehicle mix. The two regional constructions are methodologically distinct — one is composed from a factor and a distance, the other is a published composite — and they should not be compared as if they measured the same population.

Fuels — petrol, diesel, coal, natural gas

The UK fuel tiles read DEFRA 2026 conversion factors directly. Petrol and diesel are the average biofuel-blend figures per litre, which is to say they already incorporate the biogenic fraction mandated in UK forecourt fuel — a pure-hydrocarbon litre would carry a slightly higher factor. Coal is the industrial-grade factor per tonne. Natural gas is the gross calorific value factor per kilowatt-hour, which is the basis DEFRA publishes and the basis UK metered gas billing uses; a net calorific value figure would be roughly ten percent higher per unit of delivered energy and is not what appears here.

Tip

If you are reconciling a gas equivalency against a supplier invoice, confirm the invoice is quoting gross calorific value. UK domestic and commercial gas billing conventionally is. Continental European conventions vary, and a gross-versus-net mismatch is the most common reason a gas equivalency fails to reconcile against a meter reading.

Home electricity and home energy

The UK home tiles are derived rather than published. Median annual dwelling electricity and gas consumption come from the DESNZ National Energy Efficiency Data-Framework; each is multiplied by its corresponding emission factor — the DEFRA 2026 GB location-based grid factor for electricity, the gross calorific value gas factor for gas — and the home-energy tile sums the two. The result is the annual operational carbon of a median British dwelling, which is a statistical construct rather than any actual house.

The US home tiles arrive pre-composed from the EPA reference set as a home-energy-year figure and a home-electricity-year figure. As with the vehicle tiles, the UK construction is bottom-up from separately-sourced components and the US construction is a published composite. Both are defensible; neither is the other.

Tree seedlings grown for ten years

This is the tile most often quoted and most often quoted wrongly. The denominator is the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference figure for the cumulative sequestration of a single urban tree seedling across a ten-year growth period, derived from McPherson’s work on US urban tree species mixes. It is not an annual rate. It is not a mature tree. It is not a forest tree.

Warning

The ten-year period is not optional and is not a rounding detail. A statement that some quantity of CO₂e “equals N trees” is meaningless without a period, because a tree sequesters continuously across a lifespan of decades. The calculator’s label reads tree seedlings grown for ten years, and any prose, slide, or report quoting the figure must carry that period. Dropping it converts a defensible number into an unfalsifiable one.

Two further constraints. The underlying species mix is US urban, and the tile applies that basis under both region toggles — a British seedling is not represented by British data here. And the figure is a sequestration rate, describing carbon moving into a reversible biological stock over a decade. It is not an offset, it is not a credit, and it does not reduce a reported emission.

Forest area, forest preserved, wind turbines, recycling

The UK forest-area tile reads an IPCC Tier 1 removal rate for temperate broadleaf forest, expressed as CO₂e removed per hectare per year. It is a default value in the strict IPCC sense — a figure supplied for inventory compilers who lack country-specific data, carrying substantial uncertainty and no adjustment for stand age, species, soil, or management. It describes sequestration into standing biomass.

The US-only tiles — forest preserved from conversion, a wind turbine’s annual output, a short ton of waste recycled rather than landfilled — come from the EPA reference set and describe avoided emissions. Each rests on a counterfactual: that the forest would otherwise have been converted, that the turbine’s generation displaces a specific grid mix, that the waste would otherwise have decomposed anaerobically in a landfill. The counterfactual is a modelling assumption, not an observation, and the resulting figure inherits every uncertainty in that assumption. The relevant framing discipline is set out in the WBCSD avoided-emissions guidance, which is unambiguous that avoided emissions constitute a separate disclosure from an inventory and never a deduction from one.

Smartphone charges

The smartphone tile divides your input by the net electricity consumed in a single full charge, sourced through the EPA reference set from Department of Energy measurement, then multiplied by the applicable regional grid factor. It exists because the number it produces is arrestingly large and communicates scale effectively. It is the only consumer-goods equivalency in the calculator. Comparable figures circulating for beef, denim, or handset manufacture were considered and excluded: none traces to a source of comparable standing, and a well-sourced equivalency that lands is worth more than a plausible one that cannot be defended in a review.

Region basis — why the same tonne gives different answers

Switch the region toggle without changing the input quantity and every electricity-derived tile moves. This is not a defect. It is the most instructive behaviour the calculator has, and it exposes the single largest source of variance in equivalency work.

Grid intensity is the dominant variance term

A kilowatt-hour is a kilowatt-hour anywhere on earth. The carbon it carries is entirely a property of the generation mix that produced it, and generation mixes differ across regions by a factor of several. The GB grid, having largely displaced coal with wind and gas, carries a location-based intensity well under half that of the US national average, which still reflects a substantial coal and gas fleet across its constituent subregions.

The practical consequence is that any electricity-derived equivalency — home electricity, home energy, smartphone charges — is roughly two-and-a-half to three times more numerous under the UK basis than the US basis for the same input quantity. Your tonne buys you far more British kilowatt-hours than American ones, because each British kilowatt-hour is far cleaner. A reader who does not know which grid a figure was computed against cannot interpret it.

What each toggle actually uses

The UK basis uses the DEFRA 2026 GB location-based grid factor. It does not use Ember, and it does not use a market-based or residual-mix figure. The US basis uses the EPA eGRID 2023 national average. It does not use an eGRID subregion, and there is no subregional picker — a Texan and a Californian receive the same answer, though their actual grids differ by more than the UK and US national averages differ from each other.

Warning

The absence of a subregional picker is a deliberate simplification for a communication tool and a material limitation for anything else. If you need the carbon intensity of a specific US grid region, the purchased-electricity calculator reads eGRID at subregion granularity. Do not use a national-average equivalency where a subregional inventory figure is required.

Tiles with no defensible source under a given region are omitted from that region rather than substituted across. Several EPA-derived tiles — therms, oil barrels, railcars of coal, tanker trucks of gasoline, forest preserved, wind turbine, recycled waste — appear only under the US basis, because the EPA reference set supplies them and no equivalent DEFRA or DESNZ publication does. One tile appears only under the UK basis. This asymmetry is visible in the interface and is intentional. A fabricated tile would be worse than a missing one.

What equivalencies are for, and what they must never do

Equivalencies occupy a specific and narrow role. They are produced by the EPA, by DEFRA, and by essentially every national environment agency, precisely because communicating carbon quantities to non-specialist audiences is a genuine and legitimate need. The line between that need and misuse is sharp, and it is crossed constantly.

Valid — building intuition

Converting a corporate inventory figure into household or vehicle terms — or building a per-person total in the Personal Carbon Footprint Calculator — for an internal presentation, a board slide, an employee-engagement campaign, or a public-facing sustainability report’s narrative section. The equivalency illustrates the reported figure; the reported figure remains the disclosure.

Valid — relative comparison

Expressing the difference between two scenarios in common terms — a supplier switch, a fleet electrification, a site closure — where the audience needs to weigh magnitudes and lacks a reference point. The comparison is between two computed inventories; the equivalency is the vocabulary, not the calculation.

Invalid — offsetting claims

Stating that an organisation’s emissions are offset, cancelled, neutralised, or compensated by planting a number of trees derived from an equivalency. No trees have been planted; no removal has been verified; no permanence has been secured. Carbon-neutrality claims are governed by ISO 14068-1 and require retired, verified units — not an arithmetic conversion.

Invalid — netting

Subtracting a sequestered or avoided equivalency from an emitted one, or from a reported inventory total, to produce a lower net figure. All three categories describe the same input from different directions; the subtraction is circular. Nothing in the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard permits an equivalency to reduce a reported scope total.

Invalid — as an inventory figure

Reporting an equivalency-derived quantity as a Scope 1, 2, or 3 line. Equivalencies flow from an inventory, never into one. A Scope 1 figure is computed from activity data and an emission factor, not back-derived from a communication device.

Invalid — sequestration as reduction

Treating the tree-seedling or forest-area figure as a reduction against gross emissions. Removals are disclosed separately from gross emissions under every removals framework, including the GHG Protocol Land Sector and Removals Guidance. A gross figure and a removals figure are reported alongside one another; they are not summed to a net that replaces the gross.

The unifying principle is that an equivalency is a restatement of a quantity you already knew, in units your audience understands. It adds no information. It removes no carbon. Every misuse in the list above shares the same error: treating the restatement as though it changed the underlying quantity. It cannot, because it is the same quantity, divided.

Audit mode and the per-tile audit trail

The result view toggles between a standard tile display and an audit table. The audit table is the reason this calculator can be used in work that will be reviewed, and it is not a feature that equivalency tools commonly carry.

In audit mode each tile expands to a row exposing: the reference activity, its category — whether the row emits, sequesters, or avoids — the numeric denominator used, its unit, the MasterBrain canonical key it was read from, the source publication, the vintage year, and the GWP basis under which that source computed its factor. The MasterBrain version stamp for the render sits alongside. The JSON and CSV exports carry the same fields, with the category encoded explicitly.

Key Point

An equivalency quoted in a report should carry, at minimum, the activity, the period where one applies, the region basis, the source, and the vintage. Audit mode exists so that a reviewer asking “where did the tree number come from?” receives a canonical key and a citation rather than an assurance. If your organisation’s review process treats equivalencies as unsourced colour, the audit table is the argument for changing that.

The version stamp matters more than it appears to. A figure computed against one DEFRA vintage and the same figure computed a year later against the next are different numbers, both correct, describing the same physical activity under revised measurement. A report that quotes an equivalency without a vintage cannot be reproduced, and a figure that cannot be reproduced cannot be assured.

Data sources, factor vintages, and the GWP-basis mix

Every denominator this calculator uses is a live read from a named published source. None is estimated, interpolated, or carried in a fallback table. The table below is the complete provenance record. It carries no value column by design: the values are live, they change when their sources republish, and a value printed in this prose would begin drifting from the tool above it the day the next DEFRA release ships.

Four GWP bases, not one

This is the disclosure that separates a serious equivalency tool from a decorative one, and it is uncomfortable. The factors above do not share a global warming potential basis.

  • AR5 — every DEFRA-sourced UK factor. DEFRA carries AR5 GWP values internally by design and has not migrated its published conversion factors to AR6. This is expected and is not an error.
  • AR4 — the EPA eGRID national grid factor. eGRID’s methane and nitrous oxide components are computed on AR4 GWP values, which are older still.
  • AR6 — the IPCC Tier 1 forest removal rate, and the GWP authority under which corporate reporting conventionally operates.
  • CO₂ only, or unstated — the EPA Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference set. Several rows are pure CO₂ with no non-CO₂ component and therefore no GWP applies; others are CO₂e with the GWP set unpublished.

The calculator’s mode badge states the basis per region rather than asserting a single one: the UK badge reads DEFRA (AR5), which is accurate for every UK row, and the US badge reads EPA without a GWP assertion, because the eGRID grid factor is AR4 and the bundled reference rows carry no stated GWP set. Neither badge should be read as the basis for an individual tile. The forest removal rate under the UK basis is AR6-era, not AR5, despite the badge. Quote the audit-mode row, which carries the true per-factor basis.

The bases are not blended and no attempt is made to normalise them, because normalisation would require recomputing published factors from their underlying gas splits, which the published sources do not disclose in a form that would permit it. Each tile inherits the basis of its source, that basis is recorded in the audit trail, and the reconciliation rule that governs the wider platform applies here: corporate reporting defaults to AR6, DEFRA-sourced factors carry AR5 by design, and bases are never mixed inside a single total. An equivalency is not a total — it is a division — and no summation across bases occurs.

Vintage cadence

DEFRA republishes conversion factors annually, typically mid-year. EPA republishes eGRID on a roughly biennial cycle and updates the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies reference set as its inputs refresh. DESNZ publishes NEED annually with a two-year data lag. IPCC Tier 1 defaults change only with assessment cycles. Because every denominator is a live MasterBrain read, each republication propagates to this page without an editorial edit — and the figure a reader saw last year is not the figure they see today. Common mistakes when quoting equivalencies

These are the eight errors that recur in sustainability reports, board packs, press releases, and internal decks. Each is avoidable, and each is visible to a reviewer who knows what to look for.

01 — Trees quoted without a period

“Equivalent to planting N trees” is not a statement about anything. The calculator’s denominator is a ten-year cumulative sequestration figure for a single urban seedling. Quote the period. Without it the claim is unfalsifiable, and a reviewer will treat it as such.

02 — Sequestration presented as offsetting

A tree-seedling equivalency describes carbon that a hypothetical seedling would move into biomass over a decade. It does not describe carbon that has been removed, verified, or retired. Carbon-neutrality claims require retired units under a recognised standard. An arithmetic conversion is not a retirement.

03 — Categories netted against one another

All three result categories describe the same input quantity. Subtracting a sequestered or avoided figure from an emitted one yields zero, and any presentation implying a positive residual has performed an arithmetic error dressed as an environmental claim.

04 — Region basis unstated

A kilowatt-hour equivalency computed against the GB grid produces a count roughly two-and-a-half to three times that of the same input against the US national average. A figure quoted without its region basis cannot be interpreted, reproduced, or checked.

05 — Vintage unstated

DEFRA factors move annually. eGRID moves biennially. An equivalency quoted in a 2026 report and recomputed in 2028 will not match, and the mismatch will be read as an error rather than as a factor revision. Record the source year and the MasterBrain version stamp.

06 — Avoided emissions counted as sequestration

Forest preserved, a wind turbine’s output, and recycled waste describe emissions that did not occur under an assumed counterfactual. Nothing was removed from the atmosphere. Grouping them with tree seedlings under a “carbon removed” heading misrepresents both.

07 — Equivalency reported as inventory

An equivalency-derived quantity never enters a Scope 1, 2, or 3 line. Inventory figures are computed from activity data and emission factors. Back-deriving an inventory line from a communication device inverts the dependency and will fail any assurance trace.

08 — National grid average used where subregional is required

The US toggle reads an eGRID national average. Actual US subregional intensities span a wider range than the UK-to-US national gap. For an inventory figure, use a subregional factor via the purchased-electricity calculator. The equivalency is for communication, not for a Scope 2 line.

How this fits your inventory

This calculator is terminal, not foundational. Something upstream produced the quantity you typed into it, and that something was an inventory computation governed by an accounting standard. The equivalency is what you do with the answer afterwards, when you have to explain it to somebody who does not read emission-factor tables.

The upstream calculators produce the quantity. Stationary combustion converts fuel consumption into Scope 1. Mobile combustion converts fleet activity into Scope 1. Purchased electricity converts metered consumption into Scope 2 on both location-based and market-based bases. Downstream, the inventory feeds target-setting and disclosure. What none of those workflows accept is an equivalency in place of a computed figure. The correct sequence is: compute the inventory, disclose the inventory, then — separately, in the narrative, clearly labelled — translate it into terms the audience can hold. In that order, and never in reverse.

Not necessarily. CO₂e expresses the warming effect of any greenhouse gas as the mass of carbon dioxide that would produce the same effect over a chosen horizon, using global warming potential multipliers. A tonne of CO₂e might be a tonne of actual carbon dioxide, a far smaller mass of methane, or a very small mass of a refrigerant. This calculator converts the warming effect, not the molecular mass — so a tonne of CO₂e from a refrigerant leak and a tonne from a boiler produce identical equivalency counts.

None, in the sense the question intends. The calculator will tell you how many tree seedlings, grown for ten years, would sequester a tonne of CO₂ — that is a sequestration figure, not an offset. An offset requires a verified, additional, permanent removal, retired against a claim under a recognised standard such as ISO 14068-1. Dividing a tonne by a seedling’s ten-year growth does none of those things. The seedlings have not been planted, the growth has not occurred, the permanence has not been secured, and nothing has been retired.

Because the electricity is different. The GB grid, having largely displaced coal, carries a location-based carbon intensity well under half the US national average. The same tonne therefore corresponds to substantially more British kilowatt-hours than American ones — and every electricity-derived tile moves with it, including home electricity, home energy, and smartphone charges. Fuel and vehicle tiles also differ, because the UK basis composes them from DEFRA factors and DfT activity data while the US basis reads the EPA’s published composite figures.
