How the equivalency works

The number comes from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, the most widely cited source for this kind of comparison. It answers a simple question: how much CO₂e does a typical car emit for each mile it is driven?

The EPA builds the figure from average US fuel economy and the carbon content of petrol: burning one gallon emits 8.887 kg CO₂, which spread across an average 22.8 miles per gallon gives about 390 g CO₂ per mile, then scaled up slightly to include the methane and nitrous oxide from combustion as well as CO₂. The result is roughly 393 g — 0.000393 tonnes — of CO₂e per mile. It is an average of the US passenger fleet, not any specific model.

Exact factor

What the “miles driven” figure does and doesn’t mean

Equivalencies are powerful for communication and easy to misuse. Three caveats keep the comparison honest.

It’s a US-average petrol car

The 0.000393-tonne figure reflects US fuel economy and the US petrol fleet. A car in the UK or EU is typically more efficient, so it emits less per mile and the same CO₂e represents more miles. An electric vehicle emits far less at the tailpipe. Use the figure as a rough, US-anchored yardstick, and say so when you present it.

It’s tailpipe only

The equivalency counts what comes out of the exhaust (CO₂ plus a little methane and nitrous oxide). It does not include the emissions of manufacturing the car or of extracting, refining and delivering the fuel. A full lifecycle comparison would be larger; this is deliberately the operational, tailpipe figure the EPA publishes.
