How the equivalency works

The number comes from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, the most widely cited source for this kind of comparison. It rests on a measured average: how much carbon a typical acre of US forest takes out of the atmosphere in a year as the trees grow.

Where “one tonne per acre” comes from

Using US Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data, the EPA estimates that an average acre of US forest gains about 0.27 tonnes of carbon per year in living biomass, soils and dead wood. Converting carbon to carbon dioxide multiplies the mass by 44/12 (the ratio of CO₂ to carbon): 0.27 × 44/12 ≈ 0.99, which rounds to about 1.0 tonne of CO₂ per acre per year. It is a nationwide average across all forest types and ages — an individual stand can be well above or below it.

What “acres of forest” does and doesn’t mean

A forest-area equivalency is vivid and very easy to misuse. Four caveats keep it honest.

It’s a US average, not your forest

The 1 tonne per acre is a national average across every US forest type and age class. A young, fast-growing stand can sequester several times that; mature or stressed forest much less. Applying the average to a specific plot, region or non-US forest can be far off — treat it as an order-of-magnitude yardstick, not a site measurement.

It’s one year, not permanent storage

The figure is a single year’s uptake. It is not permanent removal: forest carbon can return to the atmosphere through wildfire, disease, drought or harvest. “One acre-year” describes a rate of absorption, not carbon locked away for good.

It’s an illustration, not an offset

Warning

This converter describes the size of a CO₂e figure in acres of forest — it does not mean you have offset anything, and an acre-year is not a carbon offset or credit.
